Documenting Caribbean culture, icons, steelpan, carnival, and music — connecting the Caribbean and its diaspora through stories, sound, and history.
Hello and welcome to this week’s issue of I Am Living My Life: Culture Archives — a weekly look at Caribbean culture, heritage, music, and community.
This week’s issue features highlights from Jamaica Carnival 2026, a look at the upcoming Point Fortin Borough Day celebrations, and the launch of Vincy Mas 2026.

🇯🇲 Jamaica Carnival 2026: Where Soca Meets Dancehall
Last weekend, Jamaica came alive for the 2026 staging of Jamaica Carnival. Held annually on the weekend after Easter, the week-long celebration brings together fetes across New Kingston, culminating in J’ouvert on Saturday and Road March on Sunday.
Modern Carnival in Jamaica traces back to Byron Lee, who introduced a more commercialized Carnival experience to the island in 1990. Today, it has grown into one of the Caribbean diaspora’s major Carnival destinations.
This year, my coverage on the I Am Living My Life YouTube channel included two fetes, J’ouvert on the road with Bacchanal J’ouvert, and Road March coverage from Trafalgar Road—primarily along Campari Blvd.
If you’re planning to experience Jamaica Carnival, one thing to expect is the fusion of soca and dancehall music—both on the road and at the fetes—creating a uniquely Jamaican Carnival vibe.
🥁 J’ouvert on the Road
There are three main bands for J’ouvert: Bacchanal J’ouvert, GenXS, and Yard Mas.
Bacchanal J’ouvert, the oldest J’ouvert experience in Jamaica, begins on Friday night with a high-energy soca party featuring live performances, then transitions into the road experience.
For 2026, performers included Voice, Skinny Fabulous, and V'ghn. By 4:30 AM, masqueraders took to the streets of Kingston for the full J’ouvert experience.
Meanwhile, GenXS and Yard Mas hit the road early Saturday morning with their own routes through the city.
One important note: J’ouvert bands do not follow a single route. If you choose to stay with one band, you won’t cross paths with the others—so plan accordingly.
🎉 Road March (Parade of Bands)
Road March—also referred to as Pretty Mas or Parade of Bands—takes place on Sunday and is the grand finale of the Carnival weekend.
There are three major bands on the road:
GenXS
Xodus
Yard Mas
Each band operates on its own route, but all pass along Trafalgar Road in New Kingston at some point during the day.
For spectators, Trafalgar Road is one of the best vantage points. While the gap between bands can create a lull, the experience is elevated by organized viewing areas and sponsor activations.
Two standout locations include:
Campari Stage – where bands cross
Campari Blvd – a high-energy hub with live entertainment throughout the day
🎶 Fetes & Musical Lineup
The lead-up to Road March is powered by a series of soca-driven events featuring artists from across the Caribbean.
This year’s lineup included:
Kes
Machel Montano
Voice
Christo
Yung Bredda
V'ghn
Muddy
Lil Kerry
Skinny Fabulous
The mix of regional talent reinforces Jamaica Carnival’s unique identity—where soca meets dancehall, and the wider Caribbean comes together.
🎉 Point Fortin Borough Day 2026: Culture, Community & Celebration
The Point Fortin Borough Day Launch took place on April 11, 2026, officially kicking off a series of activities leading up to Borough Day on May 2, 2026.
Celebrated annually on the first weekend in May, Point Fortin Borough Day has become one of Trinidad and Tobago’s most vibrant cultural experiences outside of Carnival. The main highlights—J’ouvert, Traditional Mas, and Pan on the Move—all take place on the first Saturday in May, creating a full day of immersive cultural expression.
🎭 Two Weeks of Community Spotlights
In the lead-up to Borough Day weekend, communities across Point Fortin host nightly “Spotlight” events over a two-week period. These free events showcase local talent and provide a platform for cultural expression at the grassroots level.
This year, a new addition—Fusion, a dedicated cultural space—was added to the lineup, featuring performances that run parallel to the Spotlight events. Alongside these, there are also several paid events that add to the overall calendar of activities.
🌍 A Carnival-Like Experience—At a Fraction of the Cost
Many visitors to Trinidad and Tobago are increasingly choosing Point Fortin Borough Day as an alternative cultural experience. With elements similar to Carnival—J’ouvert, mas, and steelband—visitors can enjoy an authentic experience at a much lower cost than the February/March season.
🥁 J’ouvert Bands to Look Out For
If you’re planning to take part in J’ouvert, there are several bands to choose from, including:
Countrie Bookie
Puncheon Boyz
Dev’s Barbershop
Prestige J’Ouvert
Taste of the Tropics Events
Just Ilusions
Fete Rat
Having collaborated with Countrie Bookie in the past, I can personally recommend them without hesitation.
🎶 For Spectators
If you prefer to experience it as a spectator, there are premium viewing options available. The I Love Cedros Crew offers packages that include access, food, drinks, and a dedicated viewing experience.
At the time of writing, packages appear to be sold out—but they’re definitely worth keeping on your radar for future Borough Day weekends.
🇻🇨 Vincy Mas 2026 Launch: The Great Escape
The official launch of Vincy Mas 2026, themed “The Great Escape,” took place on April 11, 2026, at the ET Joshua Tarmac (Argyle International Airport Tarmac).
The event marked the start of the Vincentian Carnival season, setting the tone for what promises to be another vibrant celebration of music, mas, and culture.
Vincy Mas 2026 is scheduled to run from June 26 to July 7, bringing together locals and visitors for weeks of festivities, including fetes, pageantry, and the high-energy road experience that has earned it the title of “The Hottest Carnival in the Caribbean.”
